35th CBM brings together leading figures to debate scientific advances
Held by IMPA, Mathematics Colloquium will pay tribute to Palis, who died in May
IMPA is holding the 35th edition of the Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium (CBM)the largest and most comprehensive scientific meeting in the field in the country. The event brings together internationally renowned Brazilian and foreign researchers to discuss advances in mathematical research in areas such as Dynamical Systems, Algebraic Geometry and Partial Differential Equations. Topics such as the importance of mathematics for the productive sector, mathematical olympiads, virtual reality games and the use of multimodal artificial intelligence will also feature in the program. This year’s edition will also be marked by a special tribute to Jacob Palis – one of the most important figures in Brazilian mathematics, who died in May.
The 35th CBM will be attended by five international panelists: Svetlana Jitomirskaya, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, who worked alongside Artur Avila, an extraordinary researcher at IMPA and winner of the Fields Medal in 2014. Together, they solved the famous “ten martini problem”; Gigliola StaffilaniHe is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a member of the research group known as “I-team”, focused on studies of non-linear dispersive partial differential equations, which includes mathematicians such as Terence Tao – Fields medalist in 2006; José Seadefrom the National University of Mexico, who will discuss the geometry and dynamics of discrete subgroups of the automorphism group of the projective plane; Jelani Nelson, from the University of California at Berkeley, who stands out for his research into algorithms for massive data sets and Marco Gualtierifrom the University of Toronto, a reference in differential geometry with fundamental work in generalized complex geometry. “With each edition, the Colloquium consolidates its tradition as the event that brings together and focuses the Brazilian mathematical community, in all its dimensions, including the international aspect,” says IMPA’s director-general, Marcelo Viana.
Round table “The value of mathematics outside the academy”
Another highlight of the program is the round table “The Value of Mathematics Outside Academia: Discussion on the Presence of Mathematicians in Companies and Academia-Industry Interaction”, which will debate the work of mathematicians in companies and cooperation between universities and the productive sector. Participating in the debate will be João Carabetta, director of Technology at Rio de Janeiro City Hall, Gustavo Nonato (USP-São Carlos) and Pedro Peixoto (USP) and Marcelo Viana, director-general of IMPA.
The event will also feature a series of thematic sessions. Among them, 14 presentations in the area of Visual Computing, coordinated by Visgraf (IMPA’s Computer Graphics Laboratory), with a focus on computer vision, computer graphics and artificial intelligence. Among the guests are André Araújo, from Google DeepMind, who will address issues that permeate the use of Gemini and ChatGPT, such as the use of multimodal artificial intelligence, and Steban Clua, a researcher at UFF, who will present the main strategies for improving the rendering of mixed and virtual reality games. Leo Ribeiro, a researcher at USP’s Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, will discuss the use of AI to combat child sexual abuse. The project develops solutions for the automatic detection of materials with this type of content. See the other participants here.
Held every two years since 1957, the CBM brings together researchers, professors and undergraduate and graduate students from all over the country and abroad. In all, the 35th CBM will offer five international plenary lectures; three outreach lectures, six advanced courses; five introductory courses and also 21 thematic sessions focusing on areas such as Linear Algebra, Combinatorics, PDEs, Dynamical Systems, Biomathematics, Holomorphic Sheaves and Computer Graphics.
“The Colloquium is a unique space for exchanging ideas and strengthening mathematical research in Brazil. With each edition, we bring together the most innovative and inspiring in the field,” says Jorge Vitório Pereira, scientific coordinator of the event and deputy director of IMPA.
35th CBM will pay tribute to Jacob Palis
This year’s edition will also be marked by a special tribute to Jacob Palis, researcher emeritus at IMPA and one of the greatest names in Brazilian mathematics, who died in May at the age of 85. An international reference in Dynamic Systems, Palis was director-general of IMPA, president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), a member of ten National Academies of Sciences and an Honorary Doctor of nine universities in Brazil.
As part of the tribute, Viana will give a lecture on July 30, recalling the mathematician’s importance to science. On the same day, Artur Avila, 2014 Fields medalist, Helena Nader, president of ABC and physicist Luiz Davidovich, professor emeritus at UFRJ and former president of ABC, will take part in a round table discussion on the researcher’s legacy.
