‘Axiom’: registration open for advanced math classes
Students from 9th grade EF to 3rd grade EM have until October 24th to register
IMPA Tech has something new for the academic community. The “Axiom” extension project is now open for applications for the program’s first class. Students from the 9th grade of elementary school to the 3rd grade of high school, who have skills in mathematics and are interested in advanced topics in the subject, can apply. Interested young people should fill in the registration form until October 24th. Schools can also nominate students for the project through the same forms.
The Axiom Project aims to foster interest in the exact sciences by identifying and supporting talented young people. The program aims to prepare and introduce students to mathematics content that is usually only covered at university. The meetings will take place on Saturdays, from 8am to 12pm, and will be taught by the institute’s own undergraduates, under the supervision of the project’s guiding professor and IMPA researcher, Vinicius Ramos. The classes will take place at IMPA Tech in November and January.
Due to the limited number of places, if the number of applicants exceeds the number available, an online test will be administered to rank the candidates. Questions about the selection process or the classes can be sent to the following e-mail address projeto.axioma@impatech.edu.br.
The initial lessons will cover independent topics and then move on to more structured and interconnected content. “The Axiom Project aims to be a concrete response to identifying talent, offering appropriate challenges and fostering interest in mathematics. We want to engage students and reveal the discipline as it really is, alive, rigorous and full of ideas that make sense in practice,” said student Theo Veiga, the undergraduate representing the extension project.
Veiga also explained the origin of the name ‘Axiom’. “According to the Michaelis dictionary, an axiom is, within mathematics, a ‘Proposition whose truth is so evident that no reasoning and no demonstration can make it clearer; the basis of a formal deductive system’, in other words, it is the axioms that form a solid foundation for mathematics and that allow so many advances in this area. “With the students in the project, we are trying to consolidate knowledge that we find interesting so that they become increasingly interested in this beautiful and important science,” she said.
IMPA Tech is located in Porto Maravalley, at Av. Prof. Pereira Reis, 76, in the Santo Cristo neighborhood, in the port region of Rio de Janeiro. See here more information about the program. IMPA Tech stresses that transportation to the campus is the individual responsibility of the participants.
