Axioma: Registration is now open for advanced math classes
The outreach program is designed for students from 9th grade through 12th grade
The Axioma Project, which offers advanced math classes to students from the 9th grade of elementary school through the 3rd year of high school, opened registration for the new class this Monday (29). The sessions are free, held in person on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at IMPA Tech in Rio de Janeiro’s port area, and are taught by undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at the School of Technology and Innovation.
To register, interested young people must fill out the form Registration is open until July 29. A total of 25 spots will be offered to students from public and private schools. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spots, an online test will be administered to rank the candidates.

Third Class of the Axioma Project
The outreach project began in October 2025 and has already welcomed about 50 students. Marín Giambiagi, an 18-year-old from Rio de Janeiro, learned about Axioma through social media and attended classes throughout the first semester of this year. “It’s an initiative worthy of applause, since students with an excellent academic background have volunteered their time to the local community to share their knowledge—free of charge—on subjects not covered in high school,” he said.

A third-year student, Giambiagi says the sessions exceeded his expectations and that he hopes to enroll at IMPA Tech in the future. “Although the material may seem very complex during the first few classes, it’s worth continuing to attend in the following weeks, asking questions, and trying to keep up as much as possible. The comprehensive approach to mathematics, the state-of-the-art facilities, and the highly qualified faculty are factors that have inspired me to want to study at IMPA Tech,” he added.
In 2026.1, the Axioma Project covered topics such as set theory and heuristics, complex numbers, third- and fourth-degree polynomials, series, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry, Bertrand’s Paradox, combinatorics, probability, and topics in number theory.
IMPA researchers and IMPA Tech professors Vinicius Ramos and João Pedro Ramos also participated in the project and led inspiring sessions on mathematics, study habits, and career opportunities in the field.

For the 2026.2 term, the syllabus has been revised and will include an introduction to mathematical proofs, complex numbers, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry, topics in number theory, combinatorics, probability, sequences and series, integrals, groups and symmetries, as well as optional standalone topics at the end of the course.
Theo Veiga, an IMPA Tech student representing Axioma, is pleased with the results of this session. “The class showed great interest in a variety of topics and demonstrated an excellent grasp of the material. The classes provide opportunities to encourage students to study with a level of rigor they didn’t usually apply before. We’ve noticed that they’ve developed more critical thinking skills, opened their minds to what mathematics really is, and made significant progress in the material. We’re looking forward to the next term,” he said.
