Back to school: students have a busy first week at IMPA Tech
Period 2025.2 began on Monday (11) at Maravalley Port
The first week of classes for the second semester of 2025 was a lively one at IMPA Tech. The course coordinator, Nara Bobko, welcomed the students in conversation groups to answer questions about the degree. The new subjects on the syllabus also delighted the young people, who took part in theoretical and practical activities with the teachers. In addition, 20 young people took part in phase 2 of the OBI (Brazilian Computer Olympics) test, an activity held in the computer lab.
On Monday (11), the young people in class 2025 answered their questions about the organizational structure of the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Technology and Innovation and learned about the possibilities of the flowchart. On Thursday (14), it was the turn of the 2024 class to meet with coordinator Nara, who is also a teacher and academic manager of the degree.
“The main aim is to provide a joint moment in which students’ doubts about academic activities can be resolved, as well as enabling the coordination team to understand the questions students have about the course, thus bringing students closer to the coordination team. I believe that integration between coordination and students is fundamental to the smooth running of the course,” said Nara.
For Anizio Junior, this kind of meeting is important to keep students informed and excited about new academic possibilities. “I was very happy to learn, for example, that it’s possible to take an IMPA course during my undergraduate studies in an easier way, as well as having advance information about future things, such as accommodation,” he said.
Anizio is in his second term as an undergraduate and has recently started his scientific initiation, under the supervision of Professor Roberto Imbuzeiro. “It’s an incredible feeling to be able to be in a high-level mathematics environment, to have access to the immense content of the libraries and also to be able to dedicate myself full-time to my studies. I have great expectations for this period, especially with my scientific initiation and being able to take part in more theoretical classes,” he said.
Also on Thursday (14), IMPA Tech students took part in phase 2 of the OBI (Programming Modality – Senior Level), supervised by Professor Uéverton Souza. “The OBI is an excellent opportunity for first-year undergraduate students to exercise the skills they have learned in class. 33 students took part in phase 1 and of these, 20 were classified and are taking part in phase 2. This shows the positive impact that the Programming 1 course has had on the class and I’m proud to be making an effective contribution to their education,” said the teacher.
Among the new features this semester are the return of academic seminars, the offer of new directed study topics, the start of Chinese classes, offered in partnership with the Confucius Institute at PUC-Rio, and the new LaTeX course. In addition, new professors have joined the undergraduate teaching staff. IMPA’s director-general, Marcelo Viana, took over the subject Analysis 1. The subject is part of the 2.2 term and is taught in collaboration with IMPA’s deputy director and the institute’s Olympiad manager, Jorge Vitório Pereira.
Student Igor Roberto Alves is excited about this new phase. “My expectations are the highest possible, given that we’re going deeper into our emphases with subjects that interest us. Having classes with Marcelo Viana is a unique experience, knowing that we are being taught by one of Brazil’s greatest mathematicians is gratifying,” he said.
