CBPF researcher brings AI applications to physics to IMPA Tech
Clécio De Bom is coordinator of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

CBPF (Brazilian Center for Physics Research) professor Clécio De Bom was the guest speaker at this Wednesday’s (16) academic seminar. With the title “From Fundamental Research to Industry: Applied AI in Physics and Geophysics”, the presentation covered the advanced use of classifiers through to Generative Techniques and Artificial Intelligence Agents to automate and improve scientific processes.
Through an interdisciplinary perspective, the seminar explored the applications of AI in the most fundamental physics. “These topics are important if we want to stimulate the new generations. I’m dealing with students who are going to become scientists or go into the job market, but it’s important that everyone has a broad enough vision to understand the importance of each area for applications in today’s technology,” said the professor.
In addition, the students observe relevant scientific cases in Multimessenger Astrophysics, highlighting applications such as the use of dark sirens in determining the Hubble constant, a value that indicates the speed of expansion of the Universe.
Clécio also presented CBPF’s research areas and the innovation and education work carried out at the institute, such as LAB-IA/CBPF (Artificial Intelligence Laboratory). The professor is the coordinator of the laboratory, which develops AI technologies to analyze and interpret data from experiments in physics, astronomy and other areas of society, promoting innovations derived from scientific activity.
“The Laboratory carries out multiple projects, both related to industry and more fundamental physics. It arose from the need to work with a large volume of data, particularly in astronomy,” explained Clécio.
For student Anderson Aquiles, it was a valuable meeting. “I was excited because I want to pursue fundamental physics, which is closely linked to what the teacher said. I like theory, but I like to see how practice works and today I came into contact with new things, such as astrophysics applications.”
Student Emilly Vitória, who has just started her degree, also intends to study Physics and really enjoyed the activity. “I’ve studied astronomy and astrophysics before, so it was the meeting I enjoyed the most! Some subjects I haven’t had contact with yet, but I intend to delve into them later.”
Emilly also highlighted her experience at IMPA Tech during her first month of classes. “It’s a very good experience, I know it wouldn’t be like this at other institutions. The degree has an interdisciplinary basis, so I’m seeing programming, physics and mathematics at the same time. We also have practical classes where we apply the content.”
At the end of the seminar, Clécio De Bom invited the students to sign up for the 15th CBPF School, which takes place from July 21 to August 1. The event offers activities for different profiles, such as free courses and teacher training, including options that are free and open to the public. Registration and information can be found on the official website.
The activity at IMPA Tech is part of the cycle of interdisciplinary seminars organized by Professor Uéverton Souza. Every week, researchers from IMPA or other research institutions in Rio de Janeiro are invited to give short presentations to undergraduate students. Think back to the previous meeting.
