IMPA TECH FAQ
Which degree course does IMPA Tech offer?
IMPA Tech is a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics for Technology and Innovation funded by the Federal Government. After completing the basic cycle, students choose one of four emphases: Mathematics, Physics, Data Science and Computer Science. The degree is authorized by the Ministry of Education (MEC).
How long does the bachelor’s degree last?
Four years, with theoretical and practical classes taught full-time.
Is the degree free?
Yes, IMPA Tech is an undergraduate program funded by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and MEC.
How do I join?
The IMPA Tech selection process takes place once a year and is divided into two stages. The first stage takes into account the students’ performance in the knowledge Olympiads listed below or in the Enem (National High School Exam) Mathematics test.
- OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Math Olympics) / Level 3;
- OBM (Brazilian Math Olympics) / Level 3;
- OBFEP (Brazilian Public School Physics Olympiad) / National Awards at levels B and/or C
- OBQ (Brazilian Chemistry Olympiad) / Modalities A and/or B and
- OBI (Brazilian Computer Olympics) / Programming Modality at levels 1 and/or 2, only at high school level.
The second phase of the selection process included group activities and individual interviews (online).
What score is awarded for each medal?
OBMEP / OBM Gold – 18 points
Silver OBMEP / OBM – 6 points
Bronze OBMEP / OBM – 2 points
OBFEP / OBQ / OBI Gold – 9 points
Silver OBFEP / OBQ / OBI – 3 points
Bronze OBFEP / OBQ / OBI – 1 point
How many places are on offer?
Up to 100 places are available for students from all over Brazil. The notice provides for 80% of the places for medal winners in scientific competitions and 20% for Enem candidates.
Can I sign up for both: science Olympiad and Enem medal winners?
No. When registering, candidates must choose one of the systems set out in the public notice: Olympiad or Enem.
Is there a quota system?
Yes. Of the 100 places available, 50 are earmarked for women, affirmative action and students who have attended secondary school in the public school system. The other 50 places are open to all. Check out the details of the distribution in Notice 2025.
What benefits does it offer?
In addition to being a totally free degree, IMPA Tech offers accommodation for students of legal age, in a partnership with the Rio City Hall. Students also receive food and financial assistance
Can children under 18 study at IMPA Tech?
They can, but the institution does not offer housing for minors. Accommodation is guaranteed for those over 18 or students emancipated by their legal guardians.
Are benefits maintained during the vacation period?
Yes. The financial aid granted is maintained during the vacation period, with no discounts.
Where is IMPA Tech located?
The undergraduate program is located in Porto Maravalley, a technology hub run by Rio de Janeiro City Hall, in the city’s port area. IMPA Tech shares a 10,000 m² warehouse with companies and startups from the technology sector, creating a unique environment for students and uniting academia and the job market.
I’ve been approved, but I live in another state. Now what?
IMPA Tech provides airfare and/or ground transportation for students enrolled for the start of the academic year in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
What sets the degree apart?
In addition to carrying in its DNA the tradition and excellence of IMPA, Latin America’s leading mathematics research and postgraduate institution, IMPA Tech has a transdisciplinary curriculum with theoretical and practical classes in modern laboratories. The teaching staff, made up of IMPA researchers, professors and professors from partner institutions, is highly qualified. Porto Maravalley provides a healthy interaction between the academic and professional environments, preparing students for the job market.
What areas of work can students pursue after graduating?
Throughout their degree, students will develop the skills to pursue different careers and even start their own businesses. IMPA Tech seeks to train professionals for the technology-related job market, which includes areas such as data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, information security, among others.
