Laughter and integration among colleagues marked the weekend for IMPA Tech undergraduates. On Sunday (6), the students watched the show “Duetos” at the Riachuelo Theater in downtown Rio de Janeiro. The cultural activity was promoted by the Psychopedagogical Support Center (NAP), which distributed 41 tickets to the students. The aim was to create moments of connection between the group, outside the classroom. The initiative marked student Yasmin de Barros’ first trip to the theater.
“I came from a small town in the interior of Paraíba. I didn’t have much incentive or time to go to the theater. When I arrived [at the Riachuelo Theater], I was delighted. It’s so big, so beautiful. I was looking forward to my first play of my life,” she said. The building was constructed in the 19th century and was home to the Brazilian National Casino and the Cine Palácio.
For the student, the trip was also an opportunity to relax and relieve the pressure of her first month at university. “I was already worried about the IMPA Tech routine, but it was a chance to distract myself. I didn’t even think about the calculus or algebra list. We have a very intense routine, but I really enjoyed the event. I’m going to take part more often”, concluded Yasmin.

Student Luana Mognon, who came from Porto Alegre (RS) for the new graduating class, was also present at the external activity. “It was a very different and funny experience. I enjoyed following the stories in the play and each person can identify with one, because we’re different. I loved the chance to get out of the classroom and see other places in Rio de Janeiro,” she said.
The play “Duets”, staged in more than 20 countries and translated into 10 languages, is by English playwright Peter Quilter. The play examines and comically portrays the chaotic world of modern relationships, through four stories of a woman and a man – not necessarily couples – grappling with their own desires and traumas in search of love, and facing loneliness.
Staged by Patricya Travassos and Eduardo Moscovis, the Brazilian version of “Duets” is directed by Ernesto Piccolo. The season runs until April 13 at the Riachuelo Theater.
In addition to “Duets”, the NAP has already promoted other trips to the theater. In June 2024, the students saw the play “The Novice Rebel”, also at the Riachuelo Theater. In November, it was the turn of “Pequeno Manual Antirracista”, at the PRIO Theater in Gávea.
