Eliani Beloni bets on IMPA Tech to get closer to the market
A six-time OBMEP medalist, the young woman has a master’s degree and a degree in Pure Mathematics
The trajectory of 27-year-old student Eliani Beloni is an example of how there is no right time to start studying again and recalculate plans for the future. With a degree in Pure Mathematics from Unesp (Universidade Estadual Paulista) and a master’s degree at Unicamp (Universidade Estadual de Campinas), the young woman began to rethink her plans to pursue research. Mother of a young son and looking for a better connection with the job market, she found a new opportunity at IMPA Tech. Get to know the story of the young woman from Olímpia, a city in the interior of São Paulo, in the #BeyondEquations.
“My idea in coming to Rio de Janeiro was to get closer to the market and see the more applied side of mathematics.” In the capital of Rio de Janeiro, the young woman studies at Porto Maravalley, an innovation hub in the port area, where she shares the environment with startups and technology companies. “The experience has been very positive,” she says.
Inserted in a creative, dynamic environment with various interdisciplinary events, Eliani returned to the classroom with new motivation. “We have a lot of group work and the exchange with colleagues is much more intense. I’m learning new content and I’m excited to start my internship and put it all into practice,” she says.
Before taking a turn in her academic life, Eliani had already built up a solid career in mathematics. During elementary school, she won six medals at the OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Math Olympics) – 1 gold, 3 silvers and 2 bronzes. His first award was in 2009.
“The Olympiad wasn’t as big as it is today, but it changed my life. It was through it that I entered the PIC (Jr. Scientific Initiation Program) and got to know the university,” she recalls. The first member of her family to reach public higher education, Eliani found inspiration in OBMEP to continue in the field.
Participation in the Hilbert Hotel Meeting (EHH), an OBMEP event for medal winners with good performance in the program, was also a highlight for the student. Eliani traveled by plane for the first time and visited different cities around Brazil, such as Nova Friburgo (RJ) and Florianópolis (SC).
Years later, she started a degree in Pure Mathematics at Unesp. During this time, she returned to PIC as a teacher. “I’ve always had a foot in education. It was really nice to be on the other side. I always tried to motivate the students and show them the importance of OBMEP and the opportunities I had thanks to the Olympiad.”
At that time, her plans were objective: to finish her degree in Mathematics, go on to postgraduate studies and become a university professor. With this in mind, in 2020 she entered the master’s program in Mathematics at Unicamp. Despite the enthusiasm and expectations for the new phase, the master’s ended up being online because of the Covid-19 pandemic. “It was a different time than I expected. I chose to go to Campinas to get to know the campus, live new experiences, make new friends – which didn’t happen. But it was worth it, I learned a lot. Now all that’s left is the dissertation to complete my master’s degree.”
Satisfied with the changes in her academic life, Eliani now sees IMPA Tech as a new chance to combine her solid training with real possibilities for work. “As I’ve already done a lot in mathematics, I think I can give more back to the population in this area,” she says. With the support of the NAP (Psychopedagogical Support Center) and the NCE (Careers and Internships Center), she continues to build a new chapter in her story – now more aligned with her personal and professional goals.
