O IMPA Journalism Award will reach its 7th edition in 2024. The competition will offer R$36,000 to the top three winners in the two categories, “Mathematics” and “Science Communication”. The registration will be open until June 23rd.
After four completely remote editions, this year’s awards ceremony will take place on September 7 at the National Mathematics Festival, an event organized by IMPA to disseminate mathematics to the general public in Rio de Janeiro. With the theme “Mathematics is Innovation”, FestMat wants to show how science is behind technological advances, as well as bringing the subject closer to children and adults alike.
Held since 2018, the IMPA Journalism Award aims to encourage the publication of journalistic reports on Mathematics, Science and Technology in Brazil and to recognize works of excellence that bring these topics closer to society.
The prizes will be identical in both categories: R$10,000 for 1st place, R$5,000 for 2nd place and R$3,000 for 3rd place. Honorable mentions will also be awarded in each category.
Journalists with stories published or broadcast between July 1, 2023 and June 23, 2024 are eligible for the award. It is forbidden to enter a story that has already been submitted for the previous edition of the award. Articles from all media – newspaper, magazine, blog, television, radio or other – are accepted.
In the “Mathematics” category, you can submit articles covering research, teaching the subject, the impact of knowledge olympiads, the use of mathematics in the development of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, among others. The articles in the “Science Communication” category can cover scientific and technological advances in all areas of knowledge.
According to the rules, each journalist can submit a maximum of three reports or series. The main judging criteria are: journalistic relevance of the topic, originality, depth, clarity and quality of the story. Click here to access the regulations.
