IMPA and UFPE organize MCA2029 in Recife
For the first time, Brazil will host the Mathematical Congress of the Americas
For the first time, Brazil will host the Mathematical Congress of the Americas 2029 (MCA2029), the main event in the field on the continent. IMPA and UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) will jointly organize the conference, which will be held in Recife. The event’s co-organizers, Marcelo Viana, director-general of IMPA, and Roberto Capistrano, professor in the Mathematics Department at UFPE, celebrated the choice.
“Recife has excellent conditions for holding the Mathematical Congress of the Americas and I am sure that IMPA’s partnership with UFPE will result in an event that will do justice to the leading role of Brazilian research institutions on the continent’s mathematical scene,” said Viana.
“This choice reinforces the decentralization of major scientific events, broadens the access of the local and regional community to a world-class congress and contributes to projecting Recife as a strategic center for science and innovation in the Americas. More than just an event, MCA2029 in Recife only makes clear the consolidation of Brazil as a leading player in international mathematics,” said Capistrano.
The main objective of MCA2029 is to promote scientific exchange between researchers from the Americas and other regions of the world, bringing together different areas of mathematics in a high-level academic environment. The congress will be a space for disseminating recent results, building new collaborations and strengthening international research networks. In addition, the MCA should encourage the participation of undergraduate and graduate students, young researchers and diverse groups, contributing to the renewal and diversity of the mathematical community.
“Another key point is to leave a lasting legacy, both scientific and institutional, strengthening research, training and cooperation programs in the Americas, especially in Latin America,” said Capistrano.
The first MCA was held in 2013 in Guanajuato, Mexico. The event takes place every four years and has been hosted, respectively, in Montreal (Canada) in 2017; Buenos Aires (Argentina) in 2021; and Miami (USA) in 2025.
Recife will be the fifth city to host the congress in July 2029. More information soon.
