IMPA Tech, the undergraduate program of IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics), closes its application deadline for 2025 this Friday (27) at 5pm. The bachelor’s degree in Mathematics for Technology and Innovation is 100% free and offers up to 100 places to students from all over Brazil. Medal winners from five knowledge olympiads and students with a good performance in the Enem (National High School Exam) math test can take part in the selection process. Applications can be made free of charge on the website impatech.impa.br.
Located in Porto Maravalley, a technology hub promoted by Rio de Janeiro City Hall in the city’s port area, IMPA Tech is alongside startups and technology companies, creating an environment of innovation and collaboration between academia and the job market.
With an interdisciplinary and innovative curriculum, the degree is four years long and takes place in person, full-time. In the first year of the bachelor’s degree, students study a basic cycle and then choose between four emphases: Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science and Physics. Access here.
In order to bring together the best students from different states, IMPA Tech offers student accommodation, provided by the Rio de Janeiro city government, and financial support. In addition, those approved in the final stage of the selection process will have their airfare to the start of the academic year in Rio de Janeiro covered by the institute.
The first graduating class started in April this year and brings together students from all five regions of the country. Francisco José, 19, left Fortaleza (CE) to study and was surprised by the experience. “IMPA Tech’s entire structure is designed to help students learn knowledge in practice. The Institute does its best to ensure that we have a good experience, using our time in the best possible way, dedicating ourselves to our studies. Anyone who passes should come here. It’s one of the best educational opportunities in Brazil,” he said.
For the new class, 80% of the places will go to medal winners of the OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad) – level 3 / national award; OBM (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad) – level 3; OBFEP (Brazilian Public School Physics Olympiad) – levels B and/or C National; OBQ (Brazilian Chemistry Olympiad) – modalities A and/or B; and OBI (Brazilian Computer Science Olympiad) – programming modality / levels 1 and/or 2, high school only. The remaining 20% is earmarked for Enem students. Candidates must choose a registration method.
Held in two stages, the selection process will also include group activities and individual interviews (online). As detailed in the notice, the undergraduate program will have openings for the general public and will also reserve a number of places for candidates from different quota groups.
Beatriz Carvalho, who came from Rio Branco (AC) to study for her degree, highlighted the importance of OBMEP in winning her place. “OBMEP was a unique experience that enabled me not only to improve my performance in my studies and in mathematics, but also to enter IMPA Tech. I’m grateful for this opportunity and I’m sure I’ll develop and enter the job market with excellent training,” she said. IMPA Tech aims to train students to effectively enter the technology and innovation market, working in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, information security, etc.
