IMPA Tech resumes seminars on ‘Group Theory’
Teodora Lauria, a doctoral student at IMPA, presented applications in Lie algebras
The second semester seminar cycle at IMPA Tech began on Tuesday (13) with the lecture “Groups: what are they and what do they do?”, presented by IMPA doctoral student and course assistant Teodora Lauria. With the participation of the 2024 and 2025 classes, the event marked the resumption of the meetings, which aim to show the various applications of mathematics and the interdisciplinary proposal of the degree.
Organized by Professor Uéverton Souza, the seminar introduced concepts of Group Theory and Actions, highlighting applications in areas such as physics, geometry and signal processing, as well as connections with advanced topics such as Lie Algebras and Vertex Algebras.
“I was very happy with the mass participation of IMPA Tech students. Attendance at the seminars shows their interest in advanced topics and motivates us to seek more and more diversity in topics and speakers, covering the broad spectrum of the exact sciences,” said Souza.
Teodora’s talk followed a relaxed and introductory tone, paving the way for deeper discussions on the subject. “I ended up getting interested in Representation Theory after a lecture by IMPA researcher Jethro Van Ekeren, who is now my PhD co-supervisor. I find this subject very amusing and I hope that other people become interested too, as I did,” he said.

Undergraduate student Lucas Barbosa (class of 2024) highlighted the relevance of the activity for his education. Having had previous contact with the subject during his studies at the PICME (Scientific Initiation and Master’s Program), under the guidance of IMPA researcher Vinícius Ramos, he saw the lecture as an important introduction to the subject of Lie Algebras, which he will be taking this semester.
“I found the subject fascinating. I was already interested, but it was interesting to see how groups relate to vector spaces, to Lie algebra, to Lie groups, and how all this appears in areas such as physics, quantum field theory and computing,” he commented.
