From Porto Maravalley, in Rio de Janeiro, to Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte. On Monday (27), 18-year-old student Bianca Moreno shared her day-to-day life as a graduate student at IMPA Tech with the participants of the 10th Meeting of Hilbert’s Hotel (EHH).
To a room full of students, Bianca went behind the scenes of the selection process, which reserves 80% of the places for medalists from five Knowledge Olympics, talked about the subjects of the degree, the routine in Rio de Janeiro and the coexistence between young people in the classroom and student accommodation.
Originally from Fortaleza, Bianca says she was excited to be able to talk about IMPA Tech at an event in the Northeast. “I was very happy! I had never participated in such a big event, especially as a speaker. I really enjoy talking about IMPA Tech and public speaking. Besides, Natal is beautiful and I’ve been missing the Northeast.”
The student is a bronze medalist in the OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Math Olympics), but had never participated in the EHH, which annually brings together young people who stand out in the PIC (Jr. Scientific Initiation Program). The aim of the meeting is to broaden the participants’ scientific knowledge and prepare them for future professional and academic performance.
As well as chatting about IMPA’s undergraduate program, Bianca also took the opportunity to follow other activities in the EHEA program and had contact with young people from all over the country. “I was impressed by the students. They are very intelligent and pick things up very quickly. Their logical reasoning is very agile, and I think this comes from OBMEP and the PIC classes,” she said.
Now in the second year of her bachelor’s degree, she opted for the Mathematics emphasis and considers her experience at IMPA Tech to be a positive one. “I’m finding the bachelor’s sensational, just as I did from the start. I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m excited and I’m thinking of pursuing an academic career,” she concluded.
Hilbert Hotel meeting
The Hilbert’s Hotel Meeting is an initiative of the OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Mathematical Olympiad) aimed at stimulating the interest of young talents in mathematical research. Held annually, the event brings together medal-winning students from the Olympiad and those who have excelled in the PIC (Jr. Scientific Initiation Program) for an immersion in advanced mathematical topics, in a relaxed and interactive environment.
The name of the meeting is a reference to “Hilbert’s Hotel”, a paradox proposed by mathematician David Hilbert to illustrate concepts of infinity. With this playful and provocative spirit, the event invites participants to explore deep mathematical ideas, often outside the traditional curriculum, through lectures, workshops and challenges led by different researchers.
More than just an academic meeting, Hilbert’s Hotel aims to inspire scientific vocations, show the beauty of mathematics and promote exchanges between young people from different regions of the country.
