IMPA Tech students join the PICME scientific initiation program
Research areas include geometry, algorithms and probability

IMPA Tech students who won medals at the OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad) or the OBM (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad) have joined the PICME (Scientific Initiation and Master’s Program). A total of 25 students are taking part in the initiative, which offers a solid mathematical education that goes beyond the topics covered in the bachelor’s degree classes.
Emílio Brazil, Milton Jara and Ueverton Souza are the professors responsible for coordinating the scientific initiation research with the undergraduate students. Computational geometry, random walks and graph algorithms are the topics worked on by the students with the undergraduates, respectively. The participants receive a scientific initiation grant of R$700 from the CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development).
“The meetings are going really well. We have basic material and we define the topic we’re going to work on each week. The way we solve math problems is a lot of fun,” said student Tainá Queiroz, a PICME scholarship holder.
The scientific initiation program lasts two years, and the scholarships are valid for 12 months and are renewed according to the conditions and performance of each student. PICME is coordinated at national level by IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics) and offered by Postgraduate Programs in Mathematics at various universities throughout the country.
PICME meetings in Maravalley Port
On Tuesday (12), Professor Ueverton Souza, coordinator of PICME’s research in Graph Theory, invited Maria da Cruz, a PhD student at UFF’s Institute of Computing, to give a special talk at IMPA Tech.
Maria shared information and behind-the-scenes information about her award-winning research in the area of Graph Theory and Algorithms. The work “Quasi-Bipartition Problem in Graphs with Small Dominating Sets” was recently recognized by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) and the Brazilian Society of Operational Research (SOBRAPO).
