Baccalaureate students welcomed as listeners

IMPA Tech students are also experiencing the “IMPA Summer”. The traditional program, which since 1968 has brought together undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, as well as researchers, offers courses, mini-courses and seminars at IMPA’s headquarters in the Botanical Garden.
IMPA Tech undergraduates can take part in the activities as voluntary listeners on Tuesdays and Thursdays, without compromising their bachelor’s degree activities, which take place in Port Maravalley.
On his second visit to IMPA, Pedro Henrique Porto sees the Summer Program as an incentive for academic growth and the exchange of experiences. “I feel it’s great to be here with lots of other people who also want to learn and are very intelligent. This experience contributes a lot to the desire to learn and develop. I hope to learn a lot”.
IMPA Tech students who are PICME (Scientific Initiation and Master’s Program) scholarship holders will be required to participate in the “Summer School”, with the need to submit a technical report on the activities carried out at the end of the program.
Yasmin Monteiro is one of the PICME participants. The young woman was already aware of the program’s fame and says she is still undecided about which course to take, Markov Chain or Fundamental Group and Recovering Spaces. “I’m very excited, it’s incredible to be here. Being in this beautiful building is an inspiration to me. It’s a dream, I’m very excited”.
The activities in the course can also count towards the scientific initiation work of IMPA Tech students. The PICME group will be able to integrate the subjects studied into their undergraduate research, while other students can request equivalence between their participation in the Summer Program and their academic work.
Unlike many of his colleagues, Lucas Barbosa arrived for the IMPA Summer School with the course he is going to take already decided, Fundamental Group and Covering Space. Interested in the area, the young man is excited to advance in this study and have access to a deeper approach to mathematics. “I expect IMPA to really help me study things that don’t come up in undergraduate courses. I came here to have this kind of experience and it’s always good to meet new people.”
In addition to the classes offered by the “Summer School”, IMPA Tech students are having the opportunity to take part in an Introductory English course that takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at the institute. The course is offered as an extension activity, without assessments, and brings together thirteen undergraduates. Classes began on Tuesday (7) with a presentation of the students, the objectives and the topics that will be discussed throughout the course.

Gabriel de Sousa, from Pernambuco, is taking part in the Summer and English classes. “I’m really looking forward to the Summer School at IMPA because it’s such a renowned institution in Brazil. I joined IMPA Tech with IMPA in mind, and I’m going to try my best to continue studying at this institution. It’s a dream, I never imagined I’d leave Pernambuco, study mathematics in Rio de Janeiro and be here today,” she said.
