Marcelo Viana talks to high school students in AL
The meeting took place on Saturday (14) and included students from the NES

IMPA’s director-general, Marcelo Viana, was one of the guests at the meeting “Mathematics and its applications: a career in the exact sciences”, which took place last Saturday (14) at the Jaraguá Innovation Center in Maceió (AL). The event, which was aimed at high school students, promoted a discussion about the importance of the subject and its various applications in the job market.
Students from the NES (New Supplementary Education), a program of excellence in Mathematics and Computer Science offered by Ufal (Federal University of Alagoas), which is supported by IMPA, attended the meeting, which brought together around 200 young people.
In his talk, Viana highlighted the role of IMPA Tech in an increasingly technological market. “Participating in the event was an excellent opportunity to get to know the great work carried out at the NES more closely and to publicize IMPA’s degree program among its students.”

The program also included lectures: “There’s no shortage of partners for those who do mathematics” with Professor Carlos Tomei (PUC/RIO); “Mathematics in the financial market” with Professor Yuri Saporito (FGV); “The University of São Paulo and its Center for Applied Mathematics” with Professor Tiago Pereira (USP), among other activities.

Applications open for NES 2025
The event “Mathematics and its applications: a career in the exact sciences” also provided information on registering for the NES class of 2025. Offered since 2023, the New Supplementary Education is a free course that aims to train young people in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Applications for next year start on September 20 and must be made through the official NES website.
With a duration of three years, the classes take place during the regular school day, in a hybrid format, which allows the program to serve students from all over Brazil.
The program currently has 89 participants from 14 states, most of them from public schools. IMPA offers 30 scholarships of R$500 to enrolled students. The program grants benefits of up to R$1,500.
Professor Krerley Oliveira, from UFAL’s Mathematics Institute, highlights the importance of the initiative. “The NES is an excellent opportunity for young talents to improve their academic skills and prepare for future opportunities. Our students have been successful at renowned institutions and special programs all over the world.”
