Meetings on emphases help students’ academic choices
Class 2025 moves on to new stage of bachelor’s degree from March
Students in the 2025 class of the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics for Technology and Innovation are entering a new phase of the course: the time to choose the most suitable emphasis to continue the knowledge path proposed by IMPA Tech. The Careers and Internships Center (NCE) held four meetings with the students over the last few weeks, focused on clarifying doubts about the emphases: Mathematics, Data Science, Physics and Computer Science.
The program began on January 14 with Professor Emilio Brazil, supervisor of the Data Science emphasis. On the 21st, it was the turn of Professor Claudio Lenz, from Physics, to talk to the students, followed by IMPA researcher Milton Jara, supervisor of the Mathematics emphasis, on the 28th, and Ueverton Souza, from Computer Science, who closed the cycle last Wednesday (4).
The lectures covered how the division of emphasis in the bachelor’s degree curriculum works and the career possibilities that each area offers, in order to support students in consolidating a conscious, critical choice in line with their interests. It was also an opportunity for teachers to present themselves, exploring links with real problems, academic trajectories and career paths.
Student Luana Mognon, 22, has not yet decided on her major, but is considering Data Science or Physics. For her, the meetings have expanded her academic horizons. “When I came here, I was sure I was going to go into Computing, but the meetings showed me other possibilities and made me think about what best suits my personality and skills,” she said.
In addition, the chats with the teachers inspired the young people. “It was an opportunity to get to know the teachers’ careers and it gives us a sense of hope, because it shows us the possibilities we can have by pursuing each area,” she added.

The 2026 academic year will begin in March at IMPA Tech. For Luana’s class, it’s time to choose an emphasis, marking the end of the first year. “I enjoyed the experience of the basic cycle, it’s good to have contact with other areas, with an interdisciplinary vision. I’m very excited for the new stage, I think it’s going to be even more fun. I also want to meet the new students and make more friends here.”
The 2026 class will have 100 more students from all over Brazil. The selection process for the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation is in its final stages. The successful candidates will be announced this Friday (6), in impatech.impa.br. The young people selected must register between February 9 and 13.
