O Globo newspaper highlights IMPA Tech’s innovative curriculum
Report looks at student selection for undergraduate courses
7/02/2024

In an article published on Tuesday (6)the newspaper O Globo highlighted innovative approaches to selecting students for undergraduate courses and shaping curricula in the exact sciences. As an example of a progressive initiative, the article cited IMPA Tech, the institute’s first undergraduate course, which proposes a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics for Technology and Innovation. The report highlights the college’s selection process, which allocated 80% of places to students with the best performance in five knowledge olympiads, such as OBMEP.
“Most selection processes assess knowledge, and Enem itself is like that. But in Brazil, knowledge has a very strong socio-economic bias, and depends on the school you went to or the family you grew up in. The (math) Olympiad, on the other hand, is an assessment of reasoning ability, which is much more democratic. It’s a miracle of nature that this talent is evenly distributed across all social classes,” said IMPA’s director-general, Marcelo Viana, in an interview with the newspaper.

The article also highlighted the location of the campus – “a unique environment as it is located within Maravalley Port, an urban center created in the city’s port area to house startups and large technology companies. The idea is that academia and industry there, instead of competing, contribute to each other”.
Another example presented in the article was the Ilum School of Science, linked to CNPEM, which offers a bachelor’s degree in science and technology in Campinas (SP).
