Level 3 national medalists can apply for a place at IMPA Tech
20/12/2024

The OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Mathematical Olympiad) released this Friday (20) the list of winners of its 19th edition. Held by IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics), the country’s largest scientific competition brought together more than 18.5 million students during the first phase of the Olympiad, which this year broke a record for the number of schools and municipalities entered. A total of 56,516 institutions from 5,564 cities took part in the science competition – representing 99.9% of Brazil’s municipalities. Check out the list of winners on the!
Just like last year, OBMEP level 3 medalists will be able to compete for one of the 100 places at the IMPA Tech – IMPA’s first undergraduate program. Launched in 2023, the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics for Technology and Innovation offers student accommodation and financial aid for students who pass the selection process.
“In addition to rewarding the most talented students from all over Brazil, the math Olympiad now also opens the doors of the best undergraduate programs in Brazil to its medal winners, including IMPA Tech, IMPA’s undergraduate program in mathematics technology and innovation,” said Marcelo Viana, the institute’s director-general.
Applications for the degree are open until December 27 at impatech.impa.br. The notice reserves 80% of the places for students who have won awards in five knowledge olympiads, such as the OBMEP, and 20% for those who obtained the best marks in the Mathematics test of the Enem (National High School Exam). Awards and access to the PIC
In all, the 19th OBMEP will hand out 8,450 national medals. More than 20,000 medals will also be distributed to the best-placed students in each state. Students from public and private schools will be awarded separately. The former will receive 6,500 medals (500 gold, 1,500 silver and 4,500 bronze) and up to 45,000 honorable mention certificates. Students from private institutions will receive 1,950 medals (150 gold, 450 silver and 1,350 bronze) and up to 6,000 honorable mention certificates. At least another 20,500 medals will also be distributed to the best-placed students in each state.
Schools, Municipal Education Departments and teachers who stood out for their students’ performance will also be honored. The award ceremonies for the 19th OBMEP will take place on a date to be decided next year.
National medalists are invited to take part in the Jr. Scientific Initiation Program (PIC) with advanced classes for their academic development. Participants from public schools receive a grant of R$300 from the CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) to take part in the program.
About OBMEP
Created by IMPA in 2005, OBMEP is promoted with funds from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC). Aimed at students from the 6th year of primary school to the 3rd year of secondary school, the competition helps to stimulate the study of mathematics and identify young talents in the subject.
The Olympiad also aims to help improve the quality of basic education, allowing more Brazilian students to have access to quality teaching materials.
