OBMEP releases list of winners on Monday (22)
The 20th edition of the Olympiad set a record for schools and municipalities
The Brazilian Public School Mathematical Olympiad (OBMEP) released on Monday (22) the list of winning students from the 20th edition of the scientific competition. The full list of winners is available on the OBMEP website. Check it out here.
Held annually by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA)OBMEP reaffirms its role as the largest student scientific competition in Brazil and one of the main instruments for disseminating mathematics among children and young people from all regions.
In 2025, the first phase saw the highest number of schools and municipalities participating since the Olympiad was created. A total of 57,222 schools took part, spread over 5,566 municipalities, representing 99.93% coverage of the national territory. This edition brought together 18.6 million students, from the 6th year of elementary school to the 3rd year of secondary school, from public and private institutions across the country.
“Completing 20 editions with record numbers shows the strength of mathematics as an instrument of social transformation. Always organized by IMPA, OBMEP is present in almost every Brazilian municipality, mobilizing millions of students and revealing talents who might never have the opportunity to discover their potential. It’s a celebration of public education and science,” says Marcelo Viana, IMPA’s director-general.
Awards and access to the PIC
The 20th OBMEP will award 8,450 national medals. Public school students will receive 6,500 medals (500 gold, 1,500 silver and 4,500 bronze) and up to 45,000 honorable mention certificates. Students from private institutions will receive 1,950 medals (150 gold, 450 silver and 1,350 bronze) and up to 6,000 honorable mention certificates.

The award ceremonies for the 20th OBMEP will take place next year, on a date to be decided. Schools, municipal education departments and teachers who stood out for their students’ performance will also be honored.
National medal winners are invited to take part in the Jr. Scientific Initiation Program (PIC)which offers advanced classes aimed at students’ academic development. Applications for the program open on January 5. Participating public school students receive a monthly grant of R$300 from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
Olympic Vacancy at IMPA Tech
The OBMEP medal can mean admission to higher education. O IMPA TechIMPA’s bachelor’s degree program reserves up to 80% of its places for medal winners from knowledge Olympiads. Located in Rio de Janeiro, the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation offers student accommodation, a food allowance and financial aid for those who pass the selection process. Applications for the degree end tomorrow, December 23rd, at impatech.impa.br.
The course is 100% face-to-face and the curriculum is interdisciplinary. After a basic cycle, students choose one of four emphases: Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science and Physics. Check out the graduation video.
“With each edition, the OBMEP reveals talents from all regions of Brazil and shows how well-structured opportunities make a difference. The Olympiad opens different doors for those who stand out. IMPA Tech is one of them, where students can further their studies in mathematics and build impactful careers. Our goal is to turn vocation into opportunity,” says Jorge Vitório Pereira, IMPA’s deputy director and Olympiad manager.
