On Friday (6), IMPA Tech hosted the IMPA Olympic Girls (MOI) project for its 2024 closing program. The twelve schools that are part of the program took part in the event, which brought together 88 basic education students and 20 undergraduate and recent graduate students in mathematics at Porto Maravalley.
With the support of the Firjan Sesi School project, a MOI partner since 2024, the closing ceremony aimed to celebrate the initiatives and achievements in 2024 and set goals for 2025. “The meeting showed how the project has progressed, how the girls have grown and matured. We’ve had many achievements and we realize that this is a path we can follow with these girls,” said MOI coordinator Letícia Rangel.
The coordinator emphasized the importance of holding the event at IMPA Tech, in order to bring the MOI participants closer to the day-to-day life of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) undergraduate.

The main attraction of the event was a round table discussion between the MOI participants and young people who are studying the exact sciences. IMPA Tech students Gabriely Di Folco and Bianca Zavadisk; Elisa Frota 2023 Award winner and UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) Naval Engineering undergraduate Juliana Oliveira; and Jacarepaguá Firjan-Sesi School student Flora Maria dos Santos shared their experiences, dreams, challenges and motivations.

The meeting also featured presentations by five groups from the Firjan SESI Schools that are taking part in “Math en Jeans”. The French project, which was set up 30 years ago, offers primary school students the chance to experience practical mathematics research.
Isabela Alcântara, Mathematics Education Analyst for Basic Education Content at Firjan, pointed out that “the participation of ‘Math en Jeans’ in this final event of Olympic Girls allowed the students to experience the impact of sharing their discoveries, with their presentations reinforced by the inspiring speeches of the guests.”

The program also included a workshop on building bridges with sticks and the assembly of a collective mural on the most memorable experiences at the MOI in 2024.
