This Saturday (23rd), IMPA Tech students watched the play “Pequeno Manual Antirracista – A Peça”, which is currently playing at the PRIO Theater in Gávea, in the south of Rio de Janeiro. In the month of Black Awareness, the cultural activity was promoted by the Psychopedagogical Support Center (NAP) with the aim of provoking reflection on the social impact of individual and collective actions.
The monologue, which brings up racial issues and the fight against racism, stars Luana Xavier and the script is an adaptation of the homonymous work by Brazilian philosopher Djamila Ribeiro.
For student Yasmin Monteiro, going to the theater is a learning opportunity. “Especially because I’m studying exact sciences, it’s very easy to lock ourselves in a bubble, to stay in a study routine, in this very exact world of numbers. NAP’s initiatives are important for training us not just as mathematicians, but as humans. In the play, we have the chance to understand prejudices and inequalities that need to be realized so that we can review and take action.”
Student Daniel Couto also took advantage of the play to reflect. “This kind of initiative shows that IMPA Tech prepares us as professionals who are inserted in the world, in society, and who know how to apply academic knowledge in different contexts. In the play, I was able to see other points of view and how we can position ourselves and make a difference,” he said.
NAP coordinator Cristina Ramos points out that promoting cultural activities is a mechanism for citizen education. “The activities enrich knowledge and are a powerful mechanism that stimulates and contributes to the formation of more aware and reflective citizens. Students gain a better understanding of how to value and respect differences in society and in the academic environment, where they experience and live with diversity,” she said.
In addition to the students from the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation, the cultural activity was attended by students from IMPA, in order to promote integration in a collaborative action between the institute’s sectors.
This is the second time that IMPA Tech students have been invited by the institution to a play. In June, the students watched “The Novice Rebel” at the Riachuelo Theater in downtown Rio. Throughout the year, visits were also organized to PlanetáRio, Parque Lage and the Historical and Archaeological Circuit for the Celebration of African Heritage.
