IMPA Tech, the first undergraduate course at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), will be inaugurated on Tuesday (2) at a ceremony attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the ministers of Education, Camilo Santana, and of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, and the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes. The opening will mark the start of the first term of the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation. The event will take place at the IMPA Tech headquarters, in Porto Maravalley, at 9am.
“We have the ambition to build a unique school that selects students from among the most talented in Brazil, through the knowledge Olympiads, and offers the best training to face the challenges of technology and innovation today. We want to transform the world through the applications of mathematics,” says IMPA’s director-general, Marcelo Viana.
Free and innovative, IMPA Tech aims to provide students with solid theoretical and practical training in mathematical technology and innovation in order to succeed in the job market. Strategically located in Porto Maravalley, the city’s innovation hub, and housed in a building completely renovated by Rio’s city hall, students will study in an environment surrounded by startups and technology companies, contributing to the development of new technologies.
With funding from the federal government, the degree program will receive investments of R$18.7 million in its first year. To attract students from all over the country, IMPA Tech offers student accommodation for those over 18, thanks to a partnership with the Rio City Hall, and financial support.
The students’ selection process took into account their performance in five knowledge olympiads, such as the OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad), the largest in Brazil with more than 18 million participants, and their Enem math score, as well as virtual interviews. IMPA Tech allocates places to the general public and provides reservations for candidates from different quota groups.
With a duration of four years, the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation begins with a basic cycle of one and a half years. Students then choose between four emphases: Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science and Physics.
Master Class with André Street and Auana Mattar
The day after the official opening, on Wednesday (3), IMPA Tech will host André Street, co-founder and president of Stone, and Auana Mattar, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of TIM for the Inaugural Master Class. The guests will talk to the students about their careers, new technologies, entrepreneurship and innovation. The aim is to introduce students to a stimulating environment in which to create and innovate. Find out more.
