IMPA Tech’s Psychopedagogical Support Center (NAP) held a chat on “Social Skills, Mental Health and Bullying” with psychologist Mônica Silva. The meeting took place after classes on Thursday (29), in the auditorium of Porto Maravalley.
The aim was to show students how the acquisition and practice of social skills is fundamental to maintaining and improving mental health. During the talk, the psychological effects and damage caused by prejudice, bullying and the difficulties faced in cases of significant change, such as the transition from high school to higher education, were addressed.
Like most of the IMPA Tech students, psychologist Mônica Silva also moved out of state to study for her degree, so the ability to be flexible was highlighted in the debate. “As a community, it’s not easy to leave home. As much as we dream, reality is difficult and we have to face the processes of a new cycle,” she said.

The stages of the journey of change were explored, and the students shared the particularities of their journeys. Like a conversation wheel, the psychologist asked them what made them want to be at IMPA Tech, why they chose it and how they got to Rio de Janeiro.
Student Pedro Henrique Barbosa, from Fortaleza (CE), shared his experiences of the adaptation period. “I took advantage of this transition to change my social skills. As everyone here is making new friends, it was a good opportunity to let loose and meet new people,” he said.
“The chat created an opportunity for us to better understand the effects of the psychological difficulties we face. Becoming aware of this is important in order to put ourselves in the shoes of other colleagues and treat possible problems, such as anxiety,” added the student.
Cristina Ramos, NAP coordinator, emphasized the importance of dialogue to improve coexistence among students. “NAP supports this space as a way of reflecting on a better understanding of the issues of coexistence, mental health and respect,” she said.
The meeting made it possible to understand the skills of flexibility and adaptation, understanding the time needed for each desired goal, be it personal or academic. Before ending the chat, Silva spoke about overcoming obstacles and how fundamental it is to have a support network.
“It was an honor to be able to share my experiences with the students. It’s incredible to have the opportunity to be with young people from all over the country, in a center that is highly respected and has so much potential,” concluded the psychologist.
