IMPA opened registration for the 35th Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium (CBM) on Friday (21). Held every two years since 1957, the main scientific meeting of Brazilian mathematics will take place between July 27 and August 1, in person, at IMPA. You can register for the event at this link.
Every year, the CBM brings together hundreds of renowned researchers from Brazil and abroad, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students. In 2023, the event registered a record number of participants.
“The Brazilian Mathematical Colloquium provides a stimulating environment for mathematicians of all backgrounds. The meeting not only offers lectures by top researchers, but also encourages the participation of young talents, ensuring diversity and representativeness from various areas of mathematics. With the 35th CBM, IMPA reaffirms its commitment to strengthening and disseminating mathematics in Brazil,” said Jorge Vitório Pereira, deputy director of IMPA and coordinator of the event.
This year, the meeting will feature five internationally renowned plenary speakers whose contributions to mathematics are widely recognized. Together, they have accumulated more than 50 awards and distinctions throughout their careers.
Among the guests is researcher Svetlana Jitomirskaya (University of California, Irvine), known for her work on solving the 10-martini problem in quantum physics, in collaboration with Artur Avila, researcher extraordinaire at IMPA and the University of Zurich. Svetlana is dedicated to proving conjectures formulated by theoretical physicists.
Another highlight is José Seade, a researcher at the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and a member of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). With almost 100 articles and books published, Seade is a world reference in holomorphic dynamical systems and in the study of real and complex singularities.
Mathematician Gigliola Staffilani, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, focuses her research on non-linear dispersive partial differential equations, an area with a major impact on the modeling of physical phenomena.
In the field of computer science, IMPA is bringing Jelani Nelson, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley and president of the Computer Science Division, who stands out for his research into algorithms for massive data sets. His work includes sketching and streaming algorithms, which are fundamental to the efficient processing of large data streams.
Closing the list of panelists, Marco Gualtieri (University of Toronto) will discuss his work in differential geometry and mathematical physics, with an emphasis on the theory of generalized geometry, initiated by Nigel Hitchin.
Other activities
In addition to the traditional plenary sessions, the 35th edition of the Colloquium will also offer six advanced courses; five introductory courses, dissemination lectures, poster sessions and thematic sessions. A total of 10 researchers from IMPA are taking part in the program.
New this year is the round table “The value of mathematics outside academia: discussion on the presence of mathematicians in companies and academic-industry interaction”. The conversation will be coordinated by José Alberto Cuminato (USP-SC and CeMEAI), María Soledad Aronna (FGV EMAp) and Marta Batoréo (UFES).
