In 2024, students from 99.9% of Brazilian municipalities took part in the Brazilian Public School Math Olympics (OBMEP). This historic milestone is in addition to another great achievement: the record number of schools taking the test. In its 19th edition, the competition, designed by IMPA since 2005, reached 5,564 cities in 56,513 public and private institutions.
The country’s largest science olympiad saw the participation of 18.5 million students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd grade of high school in 2024. When the results are announced on December 20, OBMEP will award 8,450 national medals, 650 of which will be gold, 1,950 silver and 5,850 bronze, as well as 51,000 honorable mention certificates. The Olympiad’s gold medalists will take part in the traditional National Awards Ceremony in 2025.
18th OBMEP National Awards Ceremony
Six years later, the OBMEP National Awards Ceremony was once again held in Rio de Janeiro, where IMPA is based, on June 11. The 18th OBMEP ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who celebrated the Olympiad’s recent record, with 99.9% of municipalities participating.
“We jumped from 10 million to 14 million students in the Olympiad. Then we went up to 18 and even 19, and now we’re at 18. What’s important? 99.9% of the municipalities in this country have joined the Mathematical Olympiad, so mathematics is now in a city of 5,000 inhabitants and in a city of 20 million inhabitants. That’s the success. And the success is that this year we have 56,000 schools in 99% of the municipalities. Guys, it’s an extraordinary success,” said the president.
OBMEP Junior Olympics
The Olimpíada Mirim-OBMEP also had a record number of entries in 2024. An expansion of the OBMEP, created in 2022, the competition covers students from the 2nd to the 5th year of elementary school. In its third edition, Mirim reached the mark of 4.4 million students from 4,037 municipalities across Brazil. In the two previous editions, the competition brought together 7 million students.
