The Porto Maravalley (Pomar) hub, a technological and educational project that includes IMPA Tech, was inaugurated by Rio de Janeiro City Hall on Thursday (11). The space, which will be sponsored by Shell and Eletrobras, will bring together startups and large technology companies in the same building as the Mathematics Faculty.
The inauguration event was attended by the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, the Secretary of Urban and Economic Development, Chicão Bulhões, the deputy director of IMPA, Jorge Pereira, the president of Invest.Rio, Alexandre Vermeulen, the CEO of Maravalley, Daniel Barros, among other city authorities and technology entrepreneurs.
According to City Hall, in addition to the two energy giants, there are already 20 companies negotiating to set up on the site.
In the 10,000 m² warehouse in Rio’s Port Zone, around 30 rooms were built, as well as a coworking space, laboratory, auditorium, restaurant, café and a large arena for events, which is connected to IMPA Tech, the graduate program of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA).
The project’s name, Maravalley, alludes to California’s Sillicon Valley, which is home to global technology and innovation companies. The revitalization project was inspired by different technology hubs around the world, such as the old shipyard in New York’s Brooklyn district, which has been transformed into a hub with more than 500 companies.
