Seminar presents methods to help with data management
Leonardo Azevedo, a researcher at IBM, highlighted the FAIR principles
The efficient management of research data is one of the great challenges facing contemporary science. This was the central theme of the seminar “Tools and Framework for FAIR Characterization and Evaluation: Advances Towards FAIRification of (Meta)data”, held on Tuesday (4) at IMPA Tech.
Speaker Leonardo Azevedo, a researcher at IBM Research – Brazil, presented the application of the FAIR principles, which guide the location (Findability), accessibility (Accessibility), interoperability (Interoperability) and reusability (Reusability) of digital objects. The meeting also discussed the role of questionnaires and automated tools in the process of making data and metadata more structured, accessible and reusable.
“The idea was to present the work we do at IBM in the area of research and to present innovations in databases and software engineering. FAIR helps to improve research data, it leads us to important questions that need to be considered when we are evaluating the data that will be used in our experiment. I think these are important concepts for students to understand more about these work and research biases,” Azevedo explained.
During the presentation, the researcher highlighted how structured questionnaires can help characterize digital objects and understand the life cycle of research data. These instruments make it possible to identify gaps in documentation and guide improvements in the management and quality of the information produced.
The automated tools, meanwhile, carry out detailed analyses of the level of compliance of the data with the FAIR principles. Using advanced algorithms, they evaluate metadata, generate FAIRness reports and offer personalized recommendations to improve data organization and interoperability.
IMPA Tech undergraduate Lucas Fraga highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of the topic. “I found it interesting how the lecture goes into an academic area and then we can understand much more about how articles and data are evaluated. I also found it interesting that various ideas from this system can be transposed to other types of evaluation. Evaluations that we make in our personal lives, for decision-making. This can help in many areas where we need to make good decisions.”
