Serrapilheira Holds Training Course on Quantitative Ecology at IMPA Tech
Students who have already completed their undergraduate degrees may apply by September 17
The Serrapilheira Institute is now accepting applications for the 7th edition of the Training Program in Quantitative Ecology, whose theoretical component will take place on the IMPA Tech campus in Rio de Janeiro’s port area. This free program combines ecology, mathematics, and computer science to train young researchers interested in developing interdisciplinary approaches to ecological issues. Applications are open until September 17. Check out the program announcement.
Thirty students who have already completed their undergraduate degrees or are pursuing a master’s degree in any field of study will be selected. The first phase of the program runs from January 3 to March 1, 2027, and includes classes, lectures, and activities focused on formulating scientific questions and using tools such as statistics, mathematical modeling, remote sensing, and machine learning.
In addition to the theoretical training, participants will take part in a two-week scientific immersion program in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, featuring seminars, workshops, and mentoring sessions with experts from different countries.
The activities held at IMPA Tech further strengthen the ties between the program and the undergraduate program. In the previous edition, students in the bachelor’s program in Mathematics, Technology, and Innovation had the opportunity to voluntarily participate in some of the training activities and learn about a field that combines knowledge of mathematics, computer science, and life sciences.
To participate, applicants should be familiar with basic mathematics, the fundamentals of calculus and statistics, and have prior experience with a programming language such as R or Python. Some activities will be conducted in English; therefore, applicants must be able to communicate in English in an academic setting.
