Social Impact: IMPA Tech students offer free math lessons
Extension project covers content from Upper Elementary School
The Soma Social, an outreach project run by IMPA Tech undergraduate students, is now accepting registrations for a new cycle of activities. Launched in April, the initiative offers free math classes for students in grades 6 through 9 of elementary school, high school students, and adults. Registration for the upcoming classes is open until August 28 via the registration form.
Through in-person sessions on the undergraduate campus, the project aims to help participants strengthen their mathematical knowledge, overcome difficulties with basic concepts, and discover new ways to engage with the world of science. The classes are tailored to different levels of knowledge and focus on content from the final years of elementary school, which students often find challenging.
“Ever since Soma Social was founded, our main goal has been to help people of all ages learn the math covered in elementary school. Currently, the focus is on filling the gaps that arise during upper elementary school—a stage at which, across all age groups, many people begin to struggle with the subject,” said undergraduate student Paula Pires, one of the project’s founders.
Now, the goal is to reach a larger number of students, expanding the scope of the program. In class, participants are divided into two groups based on the topics covered. Group A covers topics typically studied in 6th and 7th grades, while Group B covers material from 8th and 9th grades. People of all ages can participate in either group, depending on their personal interest and availability of spots.
Series of Activities
The first cycle of the second semester of 2026 will consist of four sessions, held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at IMPA Tech in Porto Maravalley. Classes will be held on August 22 and 29 and September 5 and 12.
In Group A, students will study numerical expressions and fractions. Group B, on the other hand, will have classes on combinatorics and basic probability.
Registration is free and takes place in cycles, each lasting three to four weeks. For the first cycle, as a special exception, registration will be open until August 28 via the form.
Second-Semester Schedule
Soma Social will offer four cycles of activities for each group throughout the second semester. Registration remains open until the start of classes for each cycle and will be announced on social media and on the IMPA Tech website. In addition to the content from the first cycle, the program includes:
Group A
- Cycle 1: Numerical Expressions and Fractions — 4 classes
- Cycle 2: Logic and Interpretation — 4 classes
- Cycle 3: Geometry — 3 classes
- Cycle 4: Miscellaneous Topics — 3 classes
Group B
- Cycle 1: Combinatorics and Probability — 4 classes
- Cycle 2: Geometry — 4 classes
- Cycle 3: Equations — 3 classes
- Cycle 4: Logic and Sets — 3 classes
The activities take place in person at IMPA Tech, located at Av. Professor Pereira Reis, 76, Santo Cristo, Rio de Janeiro, RJ. The entrance is on Passeio Ernesto Nazareth.
