‘The power of communication’ is the subject of lectures with students in class 2025
Psychologist Thana Mondego explains the impact of non-verbal language

“What impact do you want to make with your message?” With this question in mind, the students of IMPA Tech class 2025 were invited on a journey of self-knowledge and transformation about the power of communication. Held over two meetings, the activity was organized by the Careers and Internships Center (NCE) and presented by psychologist Thana Mondego.
On Thursday (5), the talk explored assertive and effective communication. On Monday (9), the lecture focused on non-verbal and non-violent communication. The aim of the meetings was to foster an environment of collaboration and exchange of ideas among the students, with more time for practical activities and applications of the knowledge acquired in the chat with the psychologist.
During the chat, Thana explained how the body speaks and how our gestures have a visual impact. “Non-verbal communication is also known as body language. It’s a form of expression that complements and sometimes even contradicts verbal communication, and it plays a crucial role in social interactions.”
The psychologist highlighted how non-verbal communication can affect undergraduates’ academic performance and professional careers. Poor posture, lack of eye contact and negative visual expressions show disinterest.

Thana then presented the components of non-violent communication to the students. They are: observation, feeling, need and request. The aim of the talk was to analyze everyday situations and assess when it is appropriate or not to get involved in certain debates, following personal purposes and growth objectives.
The psychologist also shared tips on how to ensure that the purpose of the message is understood by all parties involved. Controlling the tone of voice, emotions and avoiding stressful situations, being direct and objective and valuing the other person’s time are some of the guidelines mentioned.
Student Gabrielle Vitória approved of the meetings and left the lecture with a number of reflections. “I learned that we need to improve in many ways, including understanding others and understanding ourselves. There are communication needs that are individual and people need to have empathy,” she said.
At the end of the activity, Thana proposed a practical activity. The participants were given sentences with violent communications and the challenge was to transform them into more empathetic and assertive messages.
For student Pedro Paulo, the choice of topic was interesting. “Communication is a very essential skill in many areas, whether academic or professional. We can apply what we’ve learned here in our presentations, in our personal lives, with friends and family, and in the future in the job market.”
The meetings held with class 2025 continue the series of activities promoted by the NCE with undergraduates. In March this year, Thana Mondego also spoke to class 2024 and addressed the four perspectives of communication: assertive, effective, non-violent and non-verbal. In May, the topic chosen was the importance of time management.
