Undergraduates share IMPA Tech experience at Hilbert’s Hotel
Academic immersion for OBMEP medal winners in Florianópolis
IMPA Tech students were part of the program of the 11th edition of the Hilbert Hotel Meeting (EHH)This is the traditional event for OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad) medal winners. The academic immersion promoted by IMPA took place between May 25 and 28 in Florianópolis (SC) and brought together 155 students from all over Brazil selected by the PIC (Jr. Scientific Initiation Program).
Undergraduates Yasmin de Barros and Micaele Magalhães spoke about the day-to-day life of the Bachelor of Mathematics in Innovation Technology and the possibilities offered by the course, such as the benefits offered to students, extension projects and the support centers, such as the Psychopedagogical Support Center (NAP) and the Careers and Internships Center (NCE).
“If I could sum up IMPA Tech in one word, it would be ‘opportunity’. In my presentation, I wanted to show the students how the university opened up paths for my academic career and transformed my way of seeing mathematics due to its interdisciplinary nature. This is because the institution wants to train mathematicians of the future, who know how to relate to areas other than their own,” said Yasmin.
Born in Rio Tinto, a town in the interior of Paraíba (PB), Yasmin has a silver medal and a bronze medal in the OBMEP, achievements that enabled her to enter higher education at IMPA Tech.

In the lecture, the young woman also explained how the Integratingworks, an extension project in which bachelor’s students themselves offer online tutoring.ne on high school and undergraduate subjects. The project is 100% free and open to students from all over Brazil. The live meetings are given by undergraduates, under institutional coordination and supervision.
Micaele presented the project “Portinari’s Linguistic Signature”The project, developed by IMPA Tech students and professors in partnership with the PUC-Behring Institute for Artificial Intelligence as part of the Portinari Project. The initiative aims to analyze the collection of letters written by Candido Portinari (1903-1962) using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The aim is to develop methods capable of deciding whether certain passages were actually written by Portinari, contributing to the identification of textual authorship and aspects of the artist’s thinking.
“When I took part in the EHH as a medal winner, I never thought I’d be on stage at the event as a speaker. The support of Professor Cilene Rodrigues, who is one of the participants in the project, helped me a lot in preparing the presentation. The event was very enriching, I met new people, new teachers, colleagues and reconnected with people who helped me get to where I am today,” said Micaele, a student from Piracuruca, a town in the interior of Piauí (PI).
With four silver medals and one bronze medal at OBMEP, the young woman was approved at five other universities, as well as IMPA’s undergraduate program. “Studying at IMPA Tech has been my first choice since they announced the degree. It was always my dream to study mathematics at IMPA. Before, I wanted to try for a master’s degree and a doctorate, but the chance to study for an undergraduate degree came up and that became my focus,” she said.

IMPA Tech’s academic manager, Nara Bobko, was also in Florianópolis and gave a presentation on the higher education course, such as the curriculum and the interdisciplinary possibilities offered.
“I was very pleased to take part in the Hotel de Hilbert Meeting. Accompanying this group of students who were so interested in mathematics, super curious and willing to learn, was really a very enriching experience. I’m sure that many of the participants will go on to have outstanding academic careers, and I hope to meet them again in the future at IMPA Tech or at other institutions of excellence in Brazil,” he said.
