US students visit IMPA Tech facilities
Graduate students take part in exchange program at PUC-Rio
13/12/2024

Postgraduate students from the United States visited IMPA Tech’s facilities in Porto Maravalley, in Rio de Janeiro’s port area, on Wednesday (11). The purpose of the visit was to get to know the innovation hub and the laboratories used by the students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation. The young people are graduates in different areas and from various US universities, all interested in the subject of innovation.
The Americans participate in a socio-cultural exchange at PUC-Rio through the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, a project of the United States Department of State, and receive a student scholarship to participate in activities around the world. They are encouraged to become diplomats, international market executives and foreign trade professionals.
Asla Sá, IMPA Tech’s academic manager, welcomed the visitors and presented the undergraduate program’s pedagogical proposal, especially from the point of view of innovation and how it integrates academia and the job market. The students were interested in the history of IMPA, the career of the institute’s researcher Artur Avila, the only Latin American mathematician to receive the Fields Medal, and learned about the proposal for the Pi Center (IMPA Projects and Innovation Center).

The US State Department is the body responsible for the country’s international relations. CLS aims to strengthen American ties with nations around the globe and is carried out through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the sector responsible for mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people from other countries.
In addition to the visit to Port Maravalley, the postgraduates were interested in the stories of the young students on the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics for Technology and Innovation and the IMPA Tech selection process. Free and innovative, the degree program reserves 80% of its places for medal winners from five knowledge Olympiads.

Applications for the new graduating class are open until 5pm on December 27. Medal winners from different levels of the OBMEP, OBM, OBFEP, OBQ and OBI can take part. The rest of the places are open to students who performed well in the Enem (National High School Exam) math test. Access the announcement and check out the full details.
