Workshop highlights socio-emotional skills for the future
The activity was promoted by the NCE on Thursday (4)
The workshop “Unveiling Emotional Intelligence as a differentiator in the job market” brought together IMPA Tech undergraduate students after classes on Thursday (4). The activity was led by human development specialist Cíntia Gandarely, invited by the NCE (Careers and Internships Center). The chat covered the role of emotions in achieving academic and professional results.
“Emotional intelligence is a very interesting topic, it goes beyond the technical knowledge you develop on a daily basis. What can we build together to make you successful? I want to invite you to reflect on what the job market is saying about Generation Z. Let’s improve this relationship and match you with job vacancies,” said Cíntia.
Generation Z corresponds to people born, on average, between 1995 and 2010. Growing up in a context marked by the speed of change, digitalization and constant social and technological transformation, this group is sometimes associated with stereotypes that portray them as immature or unprepared to deal with challenging situations.
According to a survey by PUCPR Carreiras, presented during the chat, 89% of professionals who fail in their careers do so because of deficiencies in socio-emotional skills, the soft skills.
In this scenario, the aim of the workshop was to help students identify emotions, classify them as positive, challenging or neutral and, from this, learn to act rationally and build solid professional relationships. “The dynamics made me more aware of the group’s feelings. I was nervous, but it wasn’t just me, others were either nervous or anxious, which seems to be common among students. Throughout the activity, we felt less worried,” said student Pedro Henrique Barbosa.

Among the socio-emotional skills discussed, the importance of employing young people capable of proposing solutions and not just identifying problems was highlighted. The willingness to learn, the ability to anticipate demands and genuine engagement with the company’s culture and objectives were also valued, aspects considered essential for the success of this generation.
Pedro Henrique added that the experience generated important reflections on the influence of emotions in everyday academic life. “We’re often preoccupied with what we’re feeling and end up disconnecting from the environment. This can confuse priorities and disorganize teamwork. It’s important that we have the self-awareness to realize when we’re losing control and confusing things. We also need to have the empathy to realize that others may also be experiencing difficulties and may end up not performing their tasks well.”
Student Daphny Santos also praised the activity. “I realized that listening carefully to other people’s proposals for solving a problem is essential to finding the best solution. The workshop was very interesting. I see the work of the NCE in a very positive light, an opportunity to work on weaknesses and identify strengths,” she said.
